Would food improve my mood?

Where do our thoughts come from? How is our mind able to conjure such crippling fears and insecurities?
I am currently reading a book; Food as a Prescription, which is meant to remind the reader that the Quran already tells us how and what we are to eat. There is a chapter which left me a little bit curious. It stated that due to the way some neurotransmitters worked in coordination with our gut microbiome, what we eat directly affects our decision-making process, and therein the type of decisions we make. I wonder if the author meant this in the context of "negative" or "positive" thoughts. Is that even possible?
Can everything be so chemically determined? do sports to trigger the release of serotonin and dopamine, eat cherries to release melatonin...and the list goes on. The idea that at the end of the day, my emotions can be regulated (i dare not say improved yet) by a combination of calculated physical acts, gives hope.
Hope that there is indeed a scientific way to explain why I feel the way I do, and it is curable.
